Welcome! if you are new to my blog I hope you will take some time and look around. I am fairly new to the blogging scene and have only been quilting for 2 yrs. This Past January I made my 1st Pattern, a Piano Runner. I had so much fun putting this together. Check out my other Blogs too. Favorote way to beat winter blues... looking at Pinterest. Advice... find a mentor, check out quilt blogs and look for videos on youtube. I am a beginner so this is what I have done.

I like Stephanie's suggestion before me... Pinterest is very addicting and there are so many inspiring quilting sources... probably too many!! As for how to beat the winter blues, I always enjoy physical activity, like walking and cross country skiing with my dog. But nothing beats a good book with a cup of tea followed by a nap!!

ReplyDeleteTo beat the winter blues I go for a walk, or if I am inside, I open the back curtains on a bright day and bask in the sunshine.
Advice for a new quilter, measure twice a cut once, but never cut when you have a migraine.
My favorite way to beat the winter blues is cooking. Then I start thinking about how hot it will be and then I'm okay with winter for a little bit longer! lol Advice is to be patient and start off small. I've only been quilting for a year and the first quilt was a queen sized patchwork with a deadline. I was so stressed and thought to myself, what did I get myself into!? lol I was able to finish it and it is a lovely quilt and the bride loved it! Thanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeletePlanning a new quilt is a great way to beat the winter blues. I would tell a new quilter to join a local guild. Quilters love to share, and you'll fin plenty of ideas and inspiration. Also attend quilt shows -- again, lots of ideas and inspiration!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite way to beat the winter blues is to buy myself a lovely bouquet of flowers. My advice to a new quilter is to be patient and don't be over critical of your work. We were all beginners once!
ReplyDeleteFirst I open all the curtains, so as much sunshine comes in as possible. Then I make a big mug of hot chocolate and read quilt blogs or surf around on Pinterest. :)

ReplyDeleteTo a new quilter - do not think your quilting has to be perfect - it is ok to make mistakes - we are not perfect your quilts don't have to be either, quite often it is only you who sees the mistakes.
I love looking at seed/flower magazines -- makes me think spring is just around the corner.
ReplyDeleteI am currently getting rid of the winter blues by making a quilt in bright spring colors. Cheers me up just looking at it! For new quilters -- there is a treasure trove of tips and information online and quilters are so helpful if you want to learn.

ReplyDeleteDon't really get winter blues, just take advantage of quilting, readying, crafting time when I can't get out! New quilters, invest your time in a beginners class to get visual and hands on help.

ReplyDeleteMy way to beat the winter blues is to scrapbook our summer pictures--or work on fun, bright colored quilts! Since I am a pretty new quilter-I am not sure what advice I have to give...I guess not to let your need for perfection overshadow the fun of learning at first.

ReplyDeleteI do not get the winter blues. I am far too busy. By the time I am done with homework and running around school all day, it is time for bed =) Advice? Find a friend who sews who will teach you or you get to do a massive amount of research solo (aka me). Also NEVER mix washed and unwashed fabrics.

ReplyDeleteIf you can locate one, attend a Spring craft festival held outdoors such as the Maple Festival held in Marathon, NY.
ReplyDeleteI live in northern Wisconsin where outdoor activities abound so that's what I do to make it through winter - get outside! Shovel, ski, snowshoe, take a walk, throw snowballs, build a snowman, feed the birds!

ReplyDeleteI like to surround myself with spring and summer things such as candles, bright colors in the house, and upbeat cheery music. Advice for a new quilter...don't get overwhelmed. There is so much advice out there and so many techniques. Just try a little of everything until you find your style!

My favorite way to beat the winter blues is to dig out the brightest fabric I have and make a new bag for the summer. My best advice to a new quilter is to take advantages of all the fabulous tutorials that other quilters post on their blogs. I've learned a ton this way!!
ReplyDeleteWe don't really get the winter blues (in the traditional sense) here in California... Our blues are about missing the snow we grew up with!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to quilting, too so don't really have any tips - although I did just come into possession of quilt clips. I don't know how I survived without them!
My favorite way to beat the winter blues is to sew. I know the more I quilt the better I will get. Since there is so much I need to learn about quilting, I spend a lot of time checking quilting blogs, looking at tutorials, visiting with other quilters...all of this is a great help to me. Even though I don't like the winter, I don't let it get me down. But, I bet that sewing with bright colors would beat the winter blues. I am a new quilter, so I love reading all of the advice on the page. I have enjoyed receiving advice from my quilting friends!

I do spend a lot of time on the dark winter nights on the computer. It is my happy spot. That and sewing of course. Advice to newbie's figure out how to achieve a 1/4 inch seam every time.

My advice would be to buy a new rotary cutter and a thread cutter. Your giveaway is going to be fun and I know that it will be a great one when the winner receives it. ReplyDeleteI don't get the winter blues. Maybe it is because I spend the winter making things. It is hard to be blue when you are creating. I advise new quilters to take a great beginner's class to learn how to use the rotary cutter, get quarter inch seams, all the basics.
ReplyDeleteI beat the winter blues by always being crafty. I quilt, sew, knit, crochet, weave, do beading and occasionaly combine them!
ReplyDeleteI love the winter time (that is being able to stay inside and sew). I love the outdoors too, but here in Texas most of the summers are so hot, it's better to be inside. More time for sewing.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite way to beat the winter blues is to quilt (of course!) As for a tip for a new quilter. I would suggest not ripping out a lot of seams. If you spend more time ripping out seams than you do sewing all you are perfecting is your ripping skills! Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI beat the blues by playing with fabric. Bring my stack to the couch with a cup of tea and I play and just feel good. For a new quilter I would say just make small projects and give yourself time to just learn. And be gentle on yourself! Quilting is fun and don't make it perfect.
ReplyDeleteWell, I live in the desert so I really do not get winter blues.... so to get rid of heatwave woes I sit on a raft in my pool.... pretty awesome - as long as I remember sunscreen. Last year I went to Cali and sat on the beach - that really helped too.

To beat the winter blues, try to catch some of the sun's rays. For a new quilter, my advice is to enjoy the process of making things. It's more important to enjoy the time than worrying about the product.

I beat the winter blues, if I get them by going to the other room and stealing my 1 yr old granddaughter from her Mom and Dad who are all temporarily living with us. She is such fun to play with right now at her age because everything is so new to her yet and she loves spending time with Grandma. She makes me laugh every day which is great as it helps me with the daily pain I live with too.
ReplyDeleteAdvice to any new quilter - learn right now where that 1/4" mark is on your machine to save yourself from the struggles of making quilt blocks and not having them the right size. I wish that would have been told to me when I started quilting a little more than 2 yrs ago.
Winter blues... well living in central TX we really don't get them but like on a rainy day a good book and chocolate work wonders:)
ReplyDeleteAdvice.... There are no rules! Most are so worried about doing it exactly right...well that doesn't always happen so make a design decision. You may like it even better!
Oh and my fav phrase to remember... if you can't see the mistake riding by on a galloping horse don't worry about it!

ReplyDeleteto chase away the winter blues I work on spring color quilts for my charity group... I joined the charity group and started making quilts using their cross stitch squares in the blocks... I find this a perfect way to test new blocks, my quilt designs and yet I get to enjoy sharing with someone who needs some extra love... my quilts go to ill children, abused children, cancer patients and nursing homes...

The best advice I could give a beginner would be to get a 1/4 inch foot....mine has been a wonderful help! I beat the winter blues by looking at photos of beach trips with our kiddos!

ReplyDeleteI live in Florida so winter is not so bad here. It can be rather damp, though. I "play" with bright spring colored fabrics to beat the Blues!
My remedy for beating the winter blues is to go into my fabric stash and select some spring-y fabrics for a new quilt.

ReplyDeleteI get Rid of the Winter Blues by going upstairs to my Sewing Room and Sew or Quilt. I have two windows and the room faces south and is usually warm and sunny! Sometimes I can see a fox or eagle or owl outside my window!
ReplyDeleteI would give a new quilter advice to take it easy and slow; and be patient; and a challenge is good and with a little practice you will get it!
Bahamas beats any winter blues I might have, I just wish I could afford it! lol!

ReplyDeleteI recently traveled to a Quilt Festival and attended with a friend. She invited me to stay for a few overnights and after the quilt festival we took all day to quilt together. It sure beat my winter blues. So much fun!

Hi Diane, I beat the blues by keeping busy as much as I can. I am kind of new but not either. What I did was to buy a machine that worked ok but not a lot of money. Then I remembered what my Grandmother taught me years ago I don't know how but it did. What I did was watch and learn because I can't learn by reading so I found as much as I could on line and still learning. Thanks for the giveaway, have a good week.

Winter blues get shoo-ed away with me by drinking lots of water, eating blueberries, and taking vitamin D or getting out in the sunshine. Advice to a new quilter: Change your sewing machine needle more often than you think you should. It sure helps avoid all the mambajamba jam up on the machine. That's my technical term.

ReplyDeleteMy advice to new quilters would be to get a good general how-to-quilt book and to practice stitching a consistent 1/4 inch seam allowance.

I get rid of the winter blues by going through my ufo's. It usually inspires me to get started on one of them, and then before I know it, I don't feel so bummed!
ReplyDeleteSpending Saturdays at my LQS, sewing, laughing and eating with friends. I teach the twister method there and I always teach them how to do a table runner and then hopefully they get so enthused they go for bigger projects. Thanks for being so generous.
